This week's WTF is an unsightly selection that we spotted at our local specialty store. These citrus fruits (hint!) are large, slightly teardrop-shaped, and look green and wrinkled until fully ripe (then they're orange). Any ideas?
It’s an Ugli fruit!
These fruits have been growing wild in Jamaica for years and are a cross between a grapefruit and a tangerine. They certainly live up to their name—pronounced “ugly”—with their wrinkled, puffy skin. Luckily, you can get past their exterior quickly because they’re very easy to peel.
These large citruses are the size of grapefruits without the sour taste. They still retain some tang but are sweet and juicy. You can eat them like a grapefruit (in half with a spoon) or segment them for a convenient snack.
