
You might not have had today’s exact WTF ingredient, but you’ve most likely had something very similar (perhaps in a salad). These crunchy morsels have a surprise red center and are at their best from fall until late winter. Any guesses? See the answer after the jump.
It’s a Beauty Heart Asian radish, also known as a watermelon radish.
These colorful treats are crunchier, sweeter, and less spicy than the red Cherry Belle radishes that Americans are used to. Thinly slice these to make a salad more festive or use them as a fun substitute for beet chips.
When choosing a radish, pick one no larger than a tennis ball and free of cracks. To make sure the inside is pink without cutting it open, look for pinkness at the taproot.

You slipped up and left a clue. The plate partially shown on the left side of the photo has traditional radishes.

Where can you find these? Normal radishes are too much for me, but I'd try this one.
