I always love combining a friend's favorite flavors to make them a "signature drink" and this cocktail is a blend of our Senior Editor's picks. Merritt wanted something spicy, smoky, and tart. This unusual margarita packs a surprising kick because of the fresh minced chile that gets shaken with the rest of the ingredients and a hint of smoke from chipotle (smoked jalapeno) powder. If you can find it at your local store, a pinch of Maldon smoked sea salt also adds a perfect hint of smoke to this drink.
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 2 ounces silver tequila, 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon minced jalapeno, 1 tablespoon lime juice, 3 ounces grapefruit juice, 1/2 teaspoon honey, and a dash of chipotle salt. Shake vigorously and pour into glass. Makes 1 drink.
For chipotle salt, mix 3 tablespoons coarse salt with 1/2 teaspoon powdered chipotle.
