Ataulfo mangoes, also called Champagne or Manila mangoes
These are by far my favorite type of mango and they are in season right now! The skin and flesh are both bright orange-yellow (think taxi cab). They have an amazing silky texture and are very sweet and juicy when ripe.
I blended the flesh from one with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, a small scoop of coconut sorbet and just a little skim milk to make this refreshing and bright-hued mango milkshake:

If you see them in the store try a couple out! Look for fruit without bruises that are firm but not hard. You can let them ripen a bit more on the counter top for a few days if you like them extra sweet.
What is your favorite thing to do with mango?

Manila mangos are also my favorites. While growing up in Veracruz Mexico, I used climb the mango trees and get them fresh, their aroma is amazing!

I had never had those kind of mangoes until a few weeks ago. You are right, so good. Brilliant idea of pairing the mangoes with coconut sorbet. Sounds refreshing.
I like mangoes in anything. I have been wanting to put together a recipe for a shrimp, avocado and mango salad. I love those three things together.

...It is my understanding that Manila mangos are a different kind of mango altogether; I like both, Ataulfo and Manila, but mom only likes Manila because they're not totally sweet, like Ataulfo, but are a little tangy as well...

You should try the Alphonso Mangoes from India. They are the sweetest and tastiest mango. Once you've tasted them you will never enjoy any other mango again!

I have been looking forward to trying those, actually. There is a large Indian grocery in my neighborhood and I suspect that they will have them soon! I am excited to try them as I have heard that they are life changing for mango lovers!

I'v eaten a lot of mangoes back home( Philippines) and usually they're sold as ice creams ( ripe ones ) and the green ones are eaten as snacks dashed with little shrimp paste; they're kind a tarty. Two days ago, I made a simple mango drink, using meat from 1 ripe mango and I put 2tbsps of frozen whipped cream and added 4 ice cubes and voila, it turn out great. You can also do the same using strawberries, oranges, bananas or any fruit that are in season.Mangoes are in season and they're not taht expensive.I get mine from an asian store and they're much cheaper than regular stores like safeway, food lion or giant. So go ahead and make more recipes or fruit drinks using mangoes.to rookie cookie, you can add ripe mangoes with tomatoes, red onions and cilantro and you'll have a good salad and serve it with grilled chicken or roast pork loin.
