Drinks to ring in Mardi Gras

Sazarac

Sazerac

This cocktail originated in New Orleans and was officially named the town drink in 2008. The Sazerac is a heady cocktail containing only a few simple and accessible ingredients. Fill a large glass or cocktail shaker with ice. Add 2 ounces Rye and a dash or two of bitters (Peychauds or Angostura). Stir to chill. Pour a little Pernod into a highball glass and swirl to coat (discard any that pools at the bottom of the glass). Strain rye mixture into coated glass and add a twist of lemon zest. Don’t drink too many!

Pimms Cup

Pimm's Cup

Though not originally from The Big Easy, New Orleans has taken the Pimm's Cup and made it all it’s own. Using a bit of lemonade and topped off 7-up or Sprite this a delightfully refreshing drink that is really perfect anytime of the year. Fill a large glass with ice. Fill the glass about 1/3 full with Pimm’s #1. Top with lemonade and 7-up or Sprite – you figure out how much of each depending on how sweet/sour you like it. Serve garnished with cucumber spears, mint, and a lemon wedge.
