Chewbacca birthday cake

This birthday cake is the most interesting (and perhaps the ugliest) cake I've ever decorated. My boyfriend requested the cake to celebrate the anniversary of his first Chewbacca cake—the one his mom made him as a kid. Using images of Chewy from the movie and other cake examples I found on the Web, my boyfriend, his mom, and I created this cake (and all of the rest of his family helped by critiquing it as we put it together).

We used a 9-by-13-inch cake pan for most of the cake, rounding the top corners of it for the head. We used a round cake to add the shoulders and to build 3-D brow, nose, and mouth. The main icing is Betty Crocker's fudge frosting recipe that my mother has used for years for her chocolate cakes. I knew the texture would be perfect for creating the hairy look of Chewbacca when I scraped it with a fork. We tinted a white frosting to create the lighter brown color and bought pink and black colors from the supermarket. His bullet belt is foil-covered chocolate pieces with frosting spread in between.

The small details are the most important parts. We put short straw pieces into the nose before frosting it, so he wouldn't be without nostrils. We also added pupils and a line down the tongue. The best part: His teeth are white Tic Tacs.

Amazingly, I had very similar cake, but baked, as a bread for Halloween kids Party, without frosting.
